Day 1: Xining, Arrival

After arriving and settling into your hotel, take some time to rest and adjust to the altitude. Xining sits at over 2,200 meters (7,200 ft), so a little relaxation will help you feel your best for the adventures ahead.

Once you're ready, head to the Mojia Street Night Market for a mouthwatering introduction to Qinghai cuisine. Savor creamy yak yogurt topped with golden honey or try tender hand-grabbed lamb, a local specialty (pay on site).

Xining

Day 2: Xining - Guide, Ta’er Monastery, Laji Mountain Trekking

Kick off your morning at Ta'er Monastery, a spiritual gem among Tibet's six great Gelugpa monasteries. Don't miss the "Three Artistic Treasures" - delicate butter sculptures that defy their perishable medium, vibrant murals telling ancient tales, and breathtaking thangka embroideries.

Wind your way up to Laji Mountain (3,820m). Pause at Zongkya Lhatse, where the world's largest Tibetan cairn towers over the landscape, its surface a mosaic of weathered stones and fluttering prayer flags.

As you descend to Guide (1,800m), the scenery shifts dramatically. Nicknamed the "Jiangnan of the Plateau", this valley oasis cradles the Yellow River Clear Scenic Area. On calm days, the river transforms into a liquid mirror, reflecting the fiery red cliffs and slender willows along its banks.

Cap off the day at Ashigong National Geopark. Board the shuttle to weave through the Seven-Colored Peaks, their striated faces blazing in sunset's glow.

Day 3: Guide - Qinghai Lake - Chaka

After breakfast, we'll journey to the breathtaking Qinghai Lake. Stroll along the pebble-strewn shoreline(4km/2h), where the turquoise waters gently lap against smooth, wave-polished stones. The air carries a crisp, mineral tang, mingling with the scent of wild alpine herbs like sea buckthorn and edelweiss dotting the grasslands.

For an unforgettable experience, try the 10km cycling route along dedicated lakeside paths. Feel the cool breeze as you pedal past traditional Tibetan prayer flags fluttering in the wind, with the sapphire-blue lake stretching beside you. The flat terrain makes it accessible for most riders, with rental bikes available at multiple points.

Continue along the scenic Ring Road West, stopping to capture the stunning vistas where sky and water merge in perfect harmony.

Chaka

Day 4: Chaka Salt Lake - Xining

Begin your day with a serene 2 km walk along the Salt Lake Wooden Path, where the sky and ground merge into a dazzling mirror under the morning light - perfect for photography.

For a deeper experience, choose between crafting handmade salt-glass ornaments at an Art Studio, where you'll shape and polish natural salt crystals into keepsakes, or embark on a thrilling 4x4 off-road adventure into restricted areas, exploring untouched salt marshes, abandoned salt-mining boats, and crystalline landscapes - best enjoyed before 10 AM when winds are calm and reflections flawless.

As you drive back to Xining, the route offers breathtaking views of the Qilian Mountains and vast grasslands along National Highway 109, with opportunities to capture the stark beauty of the Tibetan Plateau.

Pro tip: The salt flats' intense glare demands UV-protective sunglasses.

Day 5: Xining -Tongren, Kanbula National Forest Park

Depart Xining early for Kanbula National Forest Park, where dramatic red sandstone peaks rise sharply against the Tibetan Plateau’s skies. Hike the Red Rock Valley Trail (2.5 hours, moderate) through wind-sculpted cliffs and juniper forests, offering panoramic views of the Yellow River’s turquoise bends.

For a different perspective, take a 30–45-minute boat tour along the river, gliding past fiery-hued canyon walls reflected in the water.

If interested, you can join the geology tour (extra costs) to learn how millennia of erosion formed Kanbula's "cloud-kissing" danxia landforms and towering "red walls in the sky."

Later, drive to Tongren, a cultural hub of Tibetan Buddhism, where the landscape shifts to rolling golden hills dotted with prayer flags.

Day 6: Longwu Monastery, Wutun Monastery, Regong Art Center

Immerse yourself in Tibetan Buddhist culture with a morning visit to Longwu Monastery, a Gelugpa (Yellow Hat) monastery established in 1301. The Main Assembly Hall houses an 11-meter-high golden statue of Tsongkapa, the founder of the Gelugpa sect.

Continue to Wutun Monastery, known for its vibrant thangka paintings and spiritual atmosphere. In the afternoon, visit the Regong Art Center to meet master artisans and try your hand at traditional Rebgong thangka painting(optional).

As evening falls, journey back to Xining through the picturesque grasslands, dotted with prayer flags.

Day 7: Qinghai Provincial Museum, Tibetan Culture Museum

Start your morning at the Qinghai Provincial Museum, where you’ll discover fascinating artifacts like the 4,000-year-old Bronze Bird with Fish from the Qijia Culture and a stunning Bronze Mirror from the Western Zhou Dynasty. These treasures offer a glimpse into the region’s deep historical roots.

Additionally, immerse yourself in interactive 5G exhibits and digital murals from Qu Tan Temple, or catch a local ethnic dance performance.

In the afternoon, head to the Qinghai Tibetan Culture Museum to marvel at the world’s longest thangka painting - an incredible 618-meter masterpiece showcasing 1,500 years of Buddhist art. If you're lucky, you might catch skilled artisans demonstrating thangka restoration using vibrant natural pigments.

Second Honeymoon My wife and I celebrated our 20th anniversary by spending a few weeks touring around Asia. We loved how Odynovo worked with us to craft a tour of what we wanted to see and how we wanted to see it. This was our first time traveling with a private tour guide, and it was truly amazing. they took care of all transportation, tickets, and everywhere we went we had someone who not only spoke our language, but was also very well-versed in the places we were visiting. We saw Beijing and then took a bullet train to Xi'an. In both cities we had tour guides who had done this "a thousand times," and as a result knew all the tricks on where to take the best pictures, what lines to stand in, where to eat, and what not to waste your time seeing. At one point our guide pulled out ponchos from her backpack when it started to rain, while another helped us haggle for a good price on a new suitcase. We were surprised by how much we loved China, and it is safe to say that is because of the quality of service we got from Odynovo. Oh, and the hotels were great, too! In our first hotel my wife fell in love with her breakfast soup that she had to have every morning, while in Xi'an we were right around the corner from the Muslim Night Market and were able to get to it in less than 5 minutes of walking. We are already looking to see what tours we will be doing next through Odynovo, as the service was amazing, the quality was remarkable, and the cost was very worth it for what we received.

From adventures to The Great Wall, Temple of Heaven and the Forbidden City, to local markets, delicious Beijing food and roof top tea houses.Roy and our driver, Mr. Zhou, were prompt in picking us up and driving us around safely. The knowledge and fact about history and Beijing that Roy knows and explains is amazing and the fact he could answer my weird and inquisitive history questionsnwoth ease was a treat. He made it so easy to enjoy ourselves and absorb all that was around us, he even takes great photos too! 😊Polite, kind and thoughtful and ever patient in letting us take our time with things that interested us.I would highly recommend this tour and Roy again and again.

Amazing travel experience My name is Zarah M. Babangida a Nigerian and i visited Beijing with my colleagues from the office. During our 5 day stay in Beijing, Ms. Eva Ma, was our Tour guide and from the minute we came through the Arrival Gate of the Airport, we were embraced by her alluring smile and warm welcome. She remained consistent with her warmth, a kind and intelligent professional who exuded unique passion not just for her job as a tour guide but, even more so as a proud Chinese woman. Her outstanding insight and knowledge of the sweet Chinese history and heritage left us in awe. I couldn't be more proud and thankful that she was assigned to our group and she made our stay exciting, fun-filled effortless and knowledge packed. I absolutely commend her dedication to work which she depicted throughout our stay. I recommend her to every visiting tourist because to know Eva, is to love her. If it were up to me, i will increase her bonuses or upgrade her salary as i am sure most tourists would want or revisit for her sake first and then perhaps other reasons.Thank you Eva and keep the passion up🙌.
