Nanjing
Today, explore the imperial and republican heritage of Nanjing. Start with a visit to the Sun Yat-sen Mausoleum, dedicated to the "Father of Modern China" and a must-see for every visitor to Nanjing. Explore Meiling Palace, a picturesque villa once home to the Chiang Kai-shek family during the Republic of China era (1932-1947). Set amidst lush greenery, it is often called the "emerald inlaid in a necklace" from above. Next to it, visit the Ming Xiaoling Tomb, the burial site of the first emperor of the Ming Dynasty, featuring stunning stone sculptures and serene lanes. Late in the afternoon, stroll along the Ming City Wall (Taicheng section), overview the picturesque Xuanwu Lake and quaint Jiming Temple.
Nanjing
Today's journey starts at Qixia Temple, a vibrant temple built during the Southern Qi Dynasty (B.C. 484). The temple's red walls, pagodas, and the Thousand Buddha Cliff make for a picturesque and peaceful setting - especially beautiful in autumn when the leaves turn crimson.
Then, return to the city and stroll Laomendong, a lively pedestrian district, filled with local delicacies and old buildings. In the evening, embark on a boat to cruise along the Qinhuai River, where you'll be enchanted by the illuminated buildings that line its banks.
Nanjing
Begin your day with a visit to the Nanjing Museum, one of China's top cultural institutions. The museum showcases a diverse collection, including exquisite jade burial suits from 2,000 years ago and 20th-century relics. Then, explore the Presidential Palace, a historic site that reflects Nanjing's role through several dynasties, from Ming aristocracy to the office of the Republic of China. For a quieter, more intimate experience, consider exploring the Six Dynasties Museum, where you can immerse yourself in ancient history through remarkable collections of bronze and pottery artifacts.
In the afternoon, relax as you board a high-speed train for a scenic 2-hour journey to Shanghai.
Shanghai
Start your Shanghai adventure with a leisurely walk along the Bund, where you'll experience the stark contrast between neoclassical buildings and towering skyscrapers. Learn more about Shanghai's transformation at the Shanghai Urban Planning Exhibition Center. Next, immerse yourself in the tranquility of the classic Yu Garden, a masterpiece of Chinese landscaping. As you stroll through the French Concession's tree-lined streets, you'll encounter quaint shops, bustling markets, and delightful eateries. Afterward, ascend the Shanghai Tower, China's tallest building, to take in breathtaking city views from 550 meters above ground.
