Tulou Earthen Fortress in Fujian- Hakka Earthen Fortress
Last updated:October 16th, 2025

Fujian Tulou, the splendid invention of dwelling houses, pearl-like disperses in the mountainous regions in the southwest of Fujian province, a province in the west of Taiwan. The 15th to 20th century constructed buildings, known as the Hakka Earthen Fortress, represent the sophisticated building art of ancient Hakka Chinese. They have been well preserved to date and were listed as a World Heritage Site in July 2008. Tulou, in Hakka’s life, means much more than a homely shelter.

Family Kingdom

Tulou architecture was first created by the Hakka people to protect themselves. During the Jin Dynasty, dozens of wars broke out between ruthless warlords. Hundreds of people moved into hostile mountainous areas, settled down, and began to conceive a kind of house that could fulfill their dreams. Then some earthen castles, Tulous, were built in round or square shapes with a central open courtyard inside to protect their families and properties. Each Tulou has only one entrance, and all windows are outward above the second floor, which effectively prohibits the bother of bandits. Whenever the only entrance was shut, Tulou actually became an unconquerable stronghold. That is why Tulou is nicknamed “The Family Kingdom”.

Hearth Home

Set amongst fertile fields vegetating rice, tea, and tobacco, the World Heritage was made up of earth, stones, and woods. Though constructed with the most common materials, Tulous was well-built and able to stand against natural challenges, even frightening earthquakes. It was rumored that Huanji Toulou was once stricken by a terrible earthquake, whose tiles were all shaken off. And dizzy large cracks appeared in the wall. Astonishingly, the round earthen giant soon recovered by itself.

Harmonious Community

The relationship of the massive buildings to their landscape also embodies both Feng Shui principles and ideas of landscape beauty and harmony. So residents could enjoy the enviable cool summer and warm winter.

The large architectures perfectly meet the settling needs of such a big commonality. For instance, there are totally more than 384 rooms in Chengqi Tulou, which accommodates as many as 800 residents at that moment. It is said that it takes years for a kid to know all. It’s beneficial for the clan to live together, which will harmoniously enhance the close relations with each other. Children born in Tulou are not only educated by their parents but also by the whole community. This fosters a strong collective culture of the Hakka people. They will unite as one when encountering dangers.

A Cluster of Hakka Cultures

Tulou is not merely a building but also a glorious cluster of Hakka Culture. In Hakka’s words, visitors are guests. Once you get there, Hakka people will hospitably show you around the brilliant fortress and present you with mouthwatering Hakka food. The exquisite interior decorations, which you possibly never find in the most decorated 5-star plazas, appease both their communities’ physical and spiritual needs. The Elderly could tell you their long but tasteful history as you step over the threshold. You just need to listen carefully, musing inspiring pictures that naturally appear in your mind. If you want to get a clear idea of exotic Hakka cultures, Fujian Tulou is the must-go for you.

Second Honeymoon My wife and I celebrated our 20th anniversary by spending a few weeks touring around Asia. We loved how Odynovo worked with us to craft a tour of what we wanted to see and how we wanted to see it. This was our first time traveling with a private tour guide, and it was truly amazing. they took care of all transportation, tickets, and everywhere we went we had someone who not only spoke our language, but was also very well-versed in the places we were visiting. We saw Beijing and then took a bullet train to Xi'an. In both cities we had tour guides who had done this "a thousand times," and as a result knew all the tricks on where to take the best pictures, what lines to stand in, where to eat, and what not to waste your time seeing. At one point our guide pulled out ponchos from her backpack when it started to rain, while another helped us haggle for a good price on a new suitcase. We were surprised by how much we loved China, and it is safe to say that is because of the quality of service we got from Odynovo. Oh, and the hotels were great, too! In our first hotel my wife fell in love with her breakfast soup that she had to have every morning, while in Xi'an we were right around the corner from the Muslim Night Market and were able to get to it in less than 5 minutes of walking. We are already looking to see what tours we will be doing next through Odynovo, as the service was amazing, the quality was remarkable, and the cost was very worth it for what we received.

Fabulous! We had a fabulous experience with our guide and Odynovo walking the Great Wall of China, and all other sites in Beijing. We loved our Peking duck dinner. It was fabulous. Thank you, Sammie/Jing for a great experience.

Amazing travel experience My name is Zarah M. Babangida a Nigerian and i visited Beijing with my colleagues from the office. During our 5 day stay in Beijing, Ms. Eva Ma, was our Tour guide and from the minute we came through the Arrival Gate of the Airport, we were embraced by her alluring smile and warm welcome. She remained consistent with her warmth, a kind and intelligent professional who exuded unique passion not just for her job as a tour guide but, even more so as a proud Chinese woman. Her outstanding insight and knowledge of the sweet Chinese history and heritage left us in awe. I couldn't be more proud and thankful that she was assigned to our group and she made our stay exciting, fun-filled effortless and knowledge packed. I absolutely commend her dedication to work which she depicted throughout our stay. I recommend her to every visiting tourist because to know Eva, is to love her. If it were up to me, i will increase her bonuses or upgrade her salary as i am sure most tourists would want or revisit for her sake first and then perhaps other reasons.Thank you Eva and keep the passion up🙌.
